Paddle Out for Jimmy Doran, Sunday 1/29, 2pm

JimmydoranPlease join us at the south parking lot, Linda Mar Beach, in a memorial paddle out this Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2pm for long time Pacifica resident and Linda Mar surfer Jimmy Doran, who passed away Jan. 4 after a brief illness.

Jim came to Pacifica in 1973 and lived almost his whole life there. He was well known at Linda Mar Beach since he loved to surf. He got a skim board when he was very young and used to ride it along the surf's edge. Later he learned to surf, and it became the love of his life.

About 20 years ago, he went to Costa Rica with a group of surfers. Costa Rica became his second love. He would travel there almost every November to surf and hang out with friends he had made there.

Jim also liked to play soccer. He played into his early 20s. He played on several teams and made a lot of lifelong friends. In addition to his soccer buddies, he made friends with a lot of wonderful people while surfing. These wonderful friends' thoughts and sympathy have been a great help to his family.

More news from Jay Jansson

Gary Leong (one of our earliest club members) went down to Santa Barbara to compete in a Stand Up Paddle contest. On his way back Gary stayed a couple of days with us and we had a blast. He not only helped me fix a sink faucet but also got me back in the water!!

Gary is the "Thomas Edison" of the PPSC and always comes up with the most creative ideas. He along with Chris Sangiovani have the most inventive and out of the box minds in the surf world. Check out what Gary is up to on his Stand Up Paddle board http://www.youtube.com/pureshare You will get a big kick out of the video and it's a must for our website viewers to click on.

Next up was Gary's super secret Surf Vehicle that he is working on a patent for it. I can't give you the details, but I was able to easy paddle it with his two bladed paddle (patent pending) at Avila Beach in 80 degree windless and calm conditions. As it was my first journey out in the ocean for some time, I sat rather than stood on his newly created SUP. On the way in to the beach I caught a little wave and easily rode it all the way to the sand.

I felt like I was in an old time surf movie where you see the guys running up and down the beach waving their arms because they are so Stoked!

When we got home and I check my email a journalist, Pat Pemberton, from the San Luis Obispo Tribune shared this link with me http://sloblogs.thetribunenews.com/sidetracked
He had done an e - interview with me and it might be of interest to club members.

Want to remind everyone that as we live in San Luis Obispo we welcome friends to stop by for a visit and a surf when you're going up and down the coast. Just check in with me at jjansson11@yahoo.com or (805) 549-0477 to make sure we are at home when you're coming through.

Also, hope to see y'all up in Pacifica sometime soon as we'll be dropping in up there every once in awhile.

Lots of aloha

Bob Gruber 1944-2009, a major player with the PPSC

Bob's Big Smile
Bob Gruber joined the PPSC in 1988 during the first Surfari to the Santa Barbara area. He was great friends with Cam Pierce, grew up surfing Southern California and lived in Seal Beach for many years. Bob and his company, CEMCO, were generous supporters of the PPSC and all its charitable events. Despite living in Seal Beach he became a regular at all our surfaris, Surf Expos, Big Chill Outs and just surfing with us in Pacifica.

A few weeks ago Bob had a massive heart attack and passed at the young age of 66. Those years were packed with energy, love and enthusiasm. He not only surfed but was an accomplished sailor and fisherman. The ocean along with his family was the love of his life. Bob leaves behind his loving wife, Jenny Gruber, three year old son Ryan, step son Eric Halsey and many other family members and friends. We were lucky to have him as one of our PPSC brothers and will miss him dearly.

A service will be held for him at Seal Beach on January 23, 2010 with his ashes being spread at sea. May he surf forever and know our love and aloha will be riding with him.

President Emeritus Honored by the Pacifica Sports Hall of Fame

JayatPedro
Jay Jansson is being honored as both a surfer and a journalist by the Pacifica Sports Hall of Fame on February 27, 2010. He started surfing and writing in the 1960’s. Jay was a pioneer surfer on the Gulf Coast. His journalism began as a sports editor for his high school’s newspaper and year book.JayJanssonPSHOF In 1968 he enlisted in the US Navy to “Surf the World”. That gave him the opportunity to surf the East Coast, the Caribbean, Mexico, California, Hawaii, Australia, the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf and the Far East. After his first tour in Vietnam, he met his soul mate, Peggy Jansson, in 1971 while stationed on a destroyer out of Pearl Harbor. Her sister lived on Pedro Point, where he surfed after being transferred to a SF based ship in 1972. From 1973 to 1980 they moved to San Luis Obispo where Jay graduated from Cal Poly. There they were blessed with a son, Jason, and daughter, Molly. Along with studies, work and surfing, Jay published articles for local newspapers, chambers of commerce, the L.A. Times and wrote his senior project, a book on Jean Lafitte the Pirate and the Battle of New Orleans. From 1980 to 2000 the Jansson family moved back to Pacifica where Jay had a career overhauling US Navy ships until 1996 and then began a second career with Pacific Bell. Raising a family, surfing wherever the Navy took him and founding the Pedro Point Surf Club (PPSC) in 1987 with a hardy group of fellow die hard surfers all were a huge part of his life. The PPSC became a respected community organization. Monthly Newsletters, Sufaris, Surf Expos, Fog Fest parades, being the 1st Surfrider Foundation chapter, cleaning up HWY 1, political forums, water testing, beach clean ups, Shark presentations, Ocean’s Week, planning the restoration of Pacifica State Beach, saving San Pedro Mountain and the Big Chill Out surf contest were among the many activities. Surfing with family and friends was the true impetus. From 1988 to 2000 Jay was a volunteer journalist for the Pacifica Tribune, writing some 400 articles to document the history, personalities and current news of Pacifica surfing as well as promote the conservation of the beaches. Many articles were accompanied by photos from well known surf photographers and historical photos. Some of the articles became Pacifica Tribune cover stories as well as features in the SF Chronicle and the Surfers Journal. Although limited by physical disabilities today, Jay still paddles with his surf buddies in calm conditions. His writing continues to be published with historical and surf articles along with a soon to be published children’s book titled “Junior, the Cat that Loves to Surf”. “Still Stoked” will be his epitaph and he plans to be late for his own funeral.

PPSC Member Glenn Stenstrom Honored for Wrestling

PPSC member Glen Stenstrom is being honored as a two-time silver medalist collegiate wrestler at the state level and in 1976 won the silver medal at the Greco-Roman regional Olympic Trials. In 1966, while attending College of San Mateo, he was selected the team's most valuable wrestler on his way to earning All-American honors. For six years he coached the Peninsula Grapplers, a youth wrestling program.
He has coached state, world and Olympic Champions. As a middle school teacher at Ortega in the 1970s he developed a wrestling program for the students.
Glenn has been surfing Pacifica beaches since the late 1950's and has been a PPSC member for more than ten years.

PPSC member Vince Pando makes the NY Times

Not only did new member, Vince Pando bring home a 3rd Place in the Papahune Division at the LogJam Surf Contest, Pleasure Point, in April but got big time notoriety with a pic in the New York Times May 9, 'Escape' section article on longboard surf culture. Way to go Vince! Take a look.
